How we approach evidence

Before turning an idea into a recommendation, we ask what was studied, who participated, how outcomes were measured and what limits apply.

Sources & context

Each research article should identify its sources and study type. Systematic reviews, meta-analyses, longitudinal studies and trials are evaluated according to the question they address and their quality.

Conclusions with limits

A relationship between two variables does not by itself show that one causes the other. We distinguish observed findings, hypotheses and interpretations, and explain what remains uncertain.

A guide to reading critically

  1. Identify the question and the population studied.
  2. Review the method, sample and measurements.
  3. Look for limitations and alternative explanations.
  4. Check whether other research agrees or differs.
  5. Distinguish what the data shows from a proposed application.
